{"id":12869,"date":"2020-02-14T11:29:49","date_gmt":"2020-02-14T11:29:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.reposefurniture.com\/occupational-therapy\/?post_type=casestudy&#038;p=12869"},"modified":"2020-08-11T15:58:09","modified_gmt":"2020-08-11T14:58:09","slug":"stroke-living-at-home","status":"publish","type":"casestudy","link":"https:\/\/www.reposefurniture.com\/occupational-therapy\/?casestudy=stroke-living-at-home","title":{"rendered":"Stroke \u2013 Living at home"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<h1>\u00a0<\/h1>\r\n<h2>Person<\/h2>\r\n<p>Geoff<sup>1<\/sup> is a 58 year old gentleman, who suffered a left total anterior circulatory infarct (TACI) resulting in right sided inattention and neglect.<\/p>\r\n<p>Geoff leans to his right due to lack of midline trunk position awareness.<\/p>\r\n<p>He is PEG (Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy) fed, but able to swallow small amounts of thickened fluid.<\/p>\r\n<p>Geoff is hoisted for all transfers and unable to proactively alter his own position.<\/p>\r\n<p>[1] Name used for illustration purposes<\/p>\r\n<h2>Environment<\/h2>\r\n<p>Geoff lives with his wife in a large bungalow.\u00a0 A level access shower has been installed and there is an on-going assessment process regarding appropriate shower seating and transportation for him.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Occupation<\/h2>\r\n<p>Geoff depends on a number of carers to meet his functional needs including washing, dressing, administration of PEG feed and toileting regimes.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Outcome \u2013 Clinical Reasoning<\/h2>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Boston Healthcare Chair\" src=\"https:\/\/www.reposefurniture.com\/occupational-therapy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Boston-Healthcare-Chair.jpg\" alt=\"Boston Healthcare Chair\" width=\"733\" height=\"733\" \/><\/p>\r\n<h3>Boston Porter Chair<\/h3>\r\n<p>The tilt in space mechanism allows for Geoff\u2019s pressure to be redistributed with ease by carers and his wife whilst reducing shear and friction.\u00a0 It supports moving and handling by being able to fix the angle of recline to that of Geoff in the sling therefore ensuring little to no repositioning.<\/p>\r\n<p>Being able to independently adjust the back and leg-rest angles provides any number of postural changes which means that specific alterations can be made to support different activities, both to benefit Geoff and the care team.<\/p>\r\n<p>The porter controls allow carers to use the chair as a form of mobility aid, minimising the number of transfers.<\/p>\r\n<p>The Boston has the option to choose from a range of interchangeable back and seat pressure management cushions should Geoff\u2019s conditions change.<\/p>\r\n<p><a role=\"button\" href=\"\/boston\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> View the Boston Porter Chair <\/a> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Large Profile Headrest With Support\" src=\"https:\/\/www.reposefurniture.com\/occupational-therapy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/large-profile-headrest-with-support-1.jpg\" alt=\"Large Profile Headrest With Support\" width=\"290\" height=\"290\" \/><\/p>\r\n<h3>Back Cushion &#8211; Large profile headrest with support lateral<\/h3>\r\n<p>This back cushion provides Geoff with a combination of a firm back and lumbar support whilst in addition providing firm lateral supports to maintain midline trunk alignment.\u00a0 This makes it ideal for Geoff whose dense stroke has left him unable to support his own sitting balance or coordinate head\/neck movements.<\/p>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Dynaform Seat Cushion\" src=\"https:\/\/www.reposefurniture.com\/occupational-therapy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/dynaform-seat-cushion.jpg\" alt=\"Dynaform Seat Cushion\" width=\"490\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\r\n<h3>Seat Cushion \u2013 Dynaform<\/h3>\r\n<p>Geoff is at very high risk of developing pressure sores.
